“I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.” – Revelation 3:15-16
These words, spoken to the church of Laodicea, resonate across the centuries, a stark reminder of the danger of spiritual apathy. It’s easy to slip into a comfortable routine, to let our faith become a mere habit, a lukewarm ritual. We may attend services, recite prayers, and even engage in acts of service, yet our hearts remain unmoved, our passion dimmed.
The Lord’s response to this lukewarmness is not one of gentle correction, but of strong rebuke. He desires a vibrant, living faith, a fire that burns brightly within us. He longs for us to be either fully committed, ablaze with love and zeal, or even to grapple with doubt, wrestling with our faith in earnest. Anything but this tepid, indifferent state.
Why is lukewarmness so offensive to God? Because it represents a lack of genuine engagement. It’s a state of half-heartedness, a refusal to fully surrender to His love and purpose. It’s a comfortable compromise that ultimately leads to spiritual stagnation.
Today, let us examine our own hearts. Are we truly passionate about our faith, or have we allowed complacency to creep in? Are we willing to be challenged, to be stirred from our spiritual slumber?
Prayer:
Lord, forgive us for the times we have allowed our faith to grow lukewarm. Kindle within us a fire of passion for you. Help us to shed the comfort of apathy and embrace the challenge of a vibrant, living faith. Give us the courage to step out of our comfort zones and pursue you with all our hearts. Help us to be hot, or cold, but never lukewarm. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
